Whitney Strauss: Data Analytics, Skittles, and What Lies Beyond Plan A

Client manager Whitney Strauss heads up Xpio’s data visualization team, helping healthcare clients gather, understand and act on their data. COO Traci Crowder describes Whitney as a problem-solver extraordinaire: “Whitney likes solving problems so that customers get what they need when they need it.” With her paper planner and Skittles at the ready, she analyzes, visualizes and strategizes solutions to help organizations improve care while minding the bottom line.

Describe your role in the company in three sentences or less.
I help organizations implement systems that will help them gather and analyze data to maximize their outcomes.

What do you believe sets our company apart from others in the industry?
We care about our customers, and we want to make sure their needs are met. We strive to accomplish this in a way that enables them to maintain a solid relationship with their EHR vendor at the end of the project.

How do you handle stress or tight deadlines in your role?
I plan to the best of my ability. Then I eat Skittles, do the work, and pray.

How do you continue to learn and grow in your profession?
Every client and vendor team I work with is different, so I learn a lot on the job. I take training whenever possible. I ask to be on a variety of projects, and I have some amazing mentors.

What’s one thing about you that might surprise people?
I still keep a paper planner.

If you could give advice to yourself when you were starting out at Xpio, what would it be?
Initiate conversations with your co-workers.

Outside of work, what are some of your passions or hobbies?
Camping with my family, fishing with my son, crafting with my kids. I just learned how to paddle board last summer (I’m determined to take my dog with me). Also reading and scrolling social media late at night. I love walking.

If you had to pick one word to describe yourself, what would it be and why?
Resilient — I don’t give up. If plan “A” doesn’t work, I’ll try B and so on. I’ll ask for advice and if I hit my wall, I’ll ask for help.

Describe a place you’ve visited that left a lasting impression on you.
Kimball, South Dakota. I’ve traveled all over the country and the world, and I have amazing memories of many places. But in 2005, I got stuck in Kimball, South Dakota, for five days during a blizzard when they shut down I-90. The kindness those people showed was unlike anything I’d ever seen. We stayed in a motel next to a truck stop, and the locals were out helping people stuck in ditches, opening their homes, and even opening up the church. Despite having no electricity, they managed to provide hot meals at the church for everyone who was stranded. That week often comes to mind whenever I start to think I’m ‘too busy’ or too whatever to help the people around me.

Do you have a personal mantra or quote that you live by?
“Walk by faith” and “Keep moving forward.”

What’s something on your bucket list that you haven’t done yet but would love to?
I want to visit Parma Italy.

What’s something on your bucket list that you haven’t done yet but would love to?
I want to take a food road trip and eat my way through the south.

How would you explain your job to a curious 5-year-old?
I implement systems for organizations that help people

If there was a movie about your professional life, what would the title be, and who would play you?
“There She Goes Again,” starring Drew Barrymore.

If you could have an adventure with any fictional character, who would it be and why?
Moana. I would love to learn to sail.

What’s your favorite way to unwind after a busy day?
I love to sit in our double chair with my dog, scrolling mindless memes and videos, and sending them to my mom friends.

If your business card was completely accurate, what would your title be?
Cheerleader and Encourager
